Gian Vittorio Baldi
Gian Vittorio BaldiWhen Gian Vitorio Baldi came to Syracuse to receive a Sophia Award for Achievement in Film, we knew him only as a legend in the film world.

As a producer, he was responsible for several landmark films in cinema history, including The Chronicle of Anna Magdalena Bach (1968) directed by Jean-Marie Straub and Daniele Hullet, Pigpen (1969) directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini, and Four Nights of a Dreamer (1970) directed by Robert Bresson. Baldi wrote and directed his own most noted work, Fuoco in 1968; then he spent 10 working with Roberto Rosselini. He had become one of the most heralded and uncompromising of Italy’s film producers, writers, directors, winning awards from the most important film festivals throughout the world.

In 1960, Baldi had founded the Italian Documentary Institute, with the purpose of promoting the study of the art of cinema in general and documentary and short films in particular. Then in 1999 he founded Hypermedia University in Bologna, a centre for media studies, where he is still the principal. Gian Vittorio Baldi makes films with “real people” - not actors - to tell the story of those who have been “wounded by history.” He shows the culture of life and people from the inside as an intimate experience.

When he received the Sophia from The Syracuse International Film Festival in 2009for his achievements in film, he came to Syracuse, made friends and created a lasting connection. In 2010, he began the groundwork which led to the creation of the Syracuse University Abroad program: Filmmaking & Film Studies in Bologna, Italy, which has now successfully completed its second program year.

Italy 2012Maestro Baldi was born in Bologna, Italy and still lives quietly in the hills above his home city in a simple, private, renovated historic mill, decorated with the Faenza tiles he loves. And Gian Vittorio Baldi continues to be an artist, a winemaker, a father of 4 sons, and a proud grandfather. At 82, he is still making films, traveling the world, and teaching young filmmakers.

“The Sky Above Me” is his current project - an ambitious effort encompassing the story of a Brazilian astronomer and a comet set to crash into the earth. You can follow the story and the making of the film on: http://ilcielosopradime.it/
